While there are some foods that can contribute to plaque buildup, there are also some foods you can eat that can help you avoid dental plaque. Among the best ones are the following:

Green Tea

This beverage can help prevent plaque buildup with the aid of its polyphenols. Drinking green tea can suppress and even harm the bacteria that cause plaque by slowing down their growth and reducing their acid production. However, it is not recommended to add lemon or sugar as adding either of them can reverse the benefits.

Cranberry Juice

While this drink is more popular for helping people with urinary tract infections (UTIs), cranberry juice has proanthocyanidins that can stop adhesion of bacteria in the teeth and gums. This juice can interfere with the enzymes that produce the plaque, so it does not form anymore.

Hard Cheese

Whenever you eat cheese, this can activate your salivary glands, so your mouth produces more saliva. In return, it becomes easier for the mouth to wash away plaque. Hard cheeses also have the natural ability to scrub plaque off your teeth.

Fiber-Rich Fruits and Veggies

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends eating more foods that are rich in fiber because they provide detergent-like effect inside the mouth. Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables also encourage your saliva to flow more, which makes it easier to prevent plaque, cavities, and even hum problems.

Chewing Gum with No Sugar

If you can’t brush your teeth, the best thing to do is to chew sugarless gum. This can keep your saliva flowing, while removing food particles in your mouth.

Shiitake Mushrooms

 They contain lentanin, which is a type of sugar that can eat the plaque on your teeth.

While these foods can help you remove plaque, you should still have good dental hygiene to truly prevent plaque and other teeth impurities in the future.
